NYAIL Training Registration Deadline…It’s Almost Here!

Mobilizing Resources for Independent Living
Registration deadline is March 9, 2007!

Registration for the March 15th exclusive NYAIL event, presented by Richard Male, is limited to 60 people on a first come, first served basis. This event is free to NYAIL members—one registration per center with reduced rates for additional staff and board members. If the Executive Director does not plan to attend the training, please consider enrolling a staff or board member. The training will benefit the people responsible for raising money for your ILC whether they are staff, board members or volunteers.

As an added benefit each participant will receive, by email, a sample resource development plan, sample corporate sponsorship package, a sample letter of introduction to private foundations, and a published article on raising money from religious institutions and corporations.

Here’s what Richard Male says about the training: If you think your ILC is forever dependent on public dollars, join us for this critical training session to separate the myths from reality of fundraising. Sure there is a lot of competition for charitable dollars, but over $250 billion per year is granted to nonprofit organizations from private foundations, corporations, and individuals. There IS money out there for your ILC and there are “smart,” “strategic,” and “political” ways to tap into these dollars. This training session will give you the tools to succeed through a step-by-step approach to planning, implementing, and succeeding in fundraising and resource development.

To register, and for more information on the day’s agenda and overnight lodging, see the training announcement here

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Pre-registration is required of all attendees. This includes NYAIL board members who will be attending the NYAIL board strategic planning session the previous day. We must know how many people will be attending, for planning purposes.
  • Hotel guest room reservations: While Marriott Hotel guest rooms are no longer being held for NYAIL at the reduced group rate, rooms may still be available. To make reservations, please call the Marriott at (800) 443-8952. In the event that all guest rooms at the Marriott are reserved, there are many other hotels on Wolf Road and in the area. Please contact NYAIL if you would like a list of nearby hotels.

If you have any questions, please contact NYAIL at (518) 465-4650 or info@ilny.org

Governor Restores PCA Level I To Executive Budget

The executive budget had just one proposed cut to individual Medicaid services and it was the elimination of Personal Care Level 1. In the 21-day amendments to his proposed budget, the Governor restored PCA Level 1. NYAIL’s advocacy played a significant role. We provided personal stories and substantial data about what would happen to some individuals if PCA 1 was eliminated, to the Governor’s office, the Division of the Budget and the Department of Health.

Our ability to show the unintended consequences of this proposed cut was decisive. We thank Maria Dibble, NYAIL’s public policy chair, and Kevin Cleary, NYAIL’s lobbyist, for their hard work and critical contribution to this major advocacy win. Other battles will arise in the future of course but the indications are that our voice is sought after and will be heard.

RICH TIPS

It’s important to stay on top of the trends rather than having to react to them after they’ve passed you by.

Funding trends don’t make their way to us through osmosis. We read newspaper business sections, business publications, and foundation-related publications as a way to keep up to date on all that’s happening in the funding world. Here are some of the publications (and their websites) that we frequently read:

  • Guidestar – Guidestar offers a free monthly e-newsletter that highlights funding trends. The website provides its readers with non-profit IRS forms like the 990.
  • The Foundation Center – The Foundation Center is the national trade association for foundations across the country. Check out the affinity groups at their website.
  • Philanthropy News Network – Subscribe to the Philanthropy News Network e- newsletter. It has loads of great information on the funding community.
  • The Chronicle of Philanthropy – The Chronicle of Philanthropy is THE national non-profit trade publication.
  • Non-profit Times – If you work for a non- profit, you can access the Non-profit Times online for free. We especially like their capacity building articles.
  • Rich Tips Archive – Check out the Rich Tips archives for information on current funding trends.
